This homemade apple butter is autumn in a jar—naturally sweet, gently spiced, and packed with gut-loving goodness. I love making a big batch when the apple trees are full in our paddock. I then use it to make muffins and cakes, or add it daily to yogurt or cooked oats. It’s simple, wholesome, and delicious! 🍏✨

Ingredient Breakdown: Gut supportive

Apples – Rich in polyphenols, fiber, and pectin, which help support digestion and feed beneficial gut bacteria.

Water – Helps break down the apples into a smooth purée without needing any added sugars.

Cinnamon – A natural anti-inflammatory spice that can help regulate blood sugar.

Probiotic Powder (Optional) – Boosts the gut-friendly bacteria

Tips for this recipe

Use a mix of apple varieties. Combining sweet and tart apples gives a richer, more balanced flavour.

Don’t rush the thickening process. Stirring on low heat helps develop that deep, caramelised flavour without burning.

Storage. Keep in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to two weeks or freeze for longer storage.

Gut butter

Makes: Approx. 2 cups of apple butter

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 30-35 minutes (including simmering and thickening)

Ingredients

12 apples, cored and peeled

1/2 cup water

1 tsp cinnamon

Method

Start by peeling and coring your apples, and chopping into small pieces. Add the apples to a pan with the water. Bring to the boil, turn down the heat and allow to simmer for 10 -15 minutes.

Once cool, transfer to a food processor and process on high until smooth. Transfer back to the pan on a low heat and add 1 tsp cinnamon. Keep stirring until the puree thickens to make a butter, around 15-20 minutes. Transfer to an air tight container.
